No matter where you live, there are days when the sun is shining, and on those days it’s SO important to make sun care a priority. Don’t worry, I’m not here to tell you to avoid the sun at all costs because there are so many benefits to the being out in the sun (hello, Vitamin D!). What I’m here to share with you are ways that you can enjoy the outdoors on a hot sunny day and still take sun care into consideration.
Take Advantage of Shade
There is no better feeling than the hot sun touching your skin, especially after a very long cold winter. There is also nothing worse than a sunburn after that sun touches your skin! Sun care is so critical for the safety of your skin. No one likes a sunburn, and no one likes premature aging. When considering this, keep in mind that the UV rays are the strongest and most harmful mid-day. This is the time of day where you want to make sun care a top priority and take shelter under a tree/umbrella/pergola as much as possible.
Protection
On a cold winter day, you don’t go outside in a bathing suit, right? You protect your skin from the cold with a warm jacket, scarves, gloves etc. When the sun is out, it’s important that you make the same considerations. Sun care is just as important as protecting yourself from the cold winter air! Wearing a wide brimmed hat can do wonders for protection. Your neck, ears, eyes and face are all shielded and protected by the sun when you do. Another tip to add to your sun care tool box is to wear light colours! That is probably my least favourite one because I love wearing black, BUT, I do try to take my own advice because dark colours really do attract the sun!
Sunglasses
This may be an obvious one, but it’s important to include in our sun care tips! Wearing sunglasses makes it easier for you to see in the sun but it also protects your eyes and eyelids from harmful UV rays. When choosing a pair to wear, consider how cute they make you look, but also aim for as close to 100% UV protection as possible.
Wear Sunscreen
Did you know you should wear sunscreen any time the sun is out, whether it’s hot or cold? Sun care needs to be top priority any time that sun is shining! Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every 3 hours. If you’re in the water, you may need to reapply even sooner. Sunscreen is absolutely critical and should never be forgotten.
Monitor Skin
When you’re spending a lot of time in the sun, make it a priority to monitor your skin throughout the day. If you notice certain areas on your body to be more exposed and/or red than others, top up that sunscreen and take a break in the shade. You can never be too careful with sun care!
These tips can be added to your personal toolbox, but don’t forget to use them when you’re outside with your little ones, especially when you’re spending a lot of time by the pool or at the beach. Being in the water can be a distraction and sun care might be forgotten! Take advantage of our Child Ponchos to help protect your little ones during these times. The more coverage, the lesser chance of a painful sunburn!
